Lisa Liedgren Alexandersson (b. 1966, Lund, Sweden) is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, weaving, drawing, and photography to explore themes of materiality, identity, and social systems. A graduate of École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and Beckmans College of Design, her practice blends formal rigor with collective contemplation. She is the founder of the Weaving Pavilion, an ongoing experimental communal weaving initiative launched in Seattle to foster knowledge exchange between art practice and the public. Previously based in Seattle and now residing in Sweden, her award-winning work—recognized by the Artist Trust, 4Culture, and the French Ministry of Cultural and Foreign Affairs—has been featured in exhibitions and permanent collections at prominent institutions such as the Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, and the Microsoft Art Collection.
Weaving Pavilion is an experimental meeting place, a site for collective contemplation aiming to foster knowledge exchange between art practice and the general public. The project led by Lisa Liedgren Alexandersson, using the loom as a vehicle for transformation, traditionally associated as a tool for domestic or human activity to provide goods or services in an economy, participants are invited to partake in communal weaving gatherings. The gatherings are free and no experience is needed.
The project began as experimental weaving workshops in Seattle Public Park Library branches in 2019 and has grown into an ongoing artistic initiative that examines weaving as a collective generative process and form of social reproduction. Historically, social reproduction has been gendered, with the bulk of the responsibility being assigned to women. The project puts forward the following questions: What kind of labor is it to work with our bodies, movement and unique expressions within a communal setting? Does transforming oneself with others create infrastructure, and if so, how might we better understand the cultural force of such a practice?
The project was founded by artist Lisa Liedgren Alexandersson and premiered in 2020 in Seattle public parks with support from 4Culture, with plans for more weaving gatherings in 2024. - Lisa Liedgren Alexandersson
